Ride Like a Skiing Star

The skiers drive a lot - and we mean a lot. Between competitions and training venues, an average elite skier clocks tens of thousands of kilometers per season. Charlotte Kalla might be the biggest Swedish star of the recent World Championship in Lahti, but she ain't getting a financial reward for her performance from the country's skiing federation. Despite winning two individual medals and a silver as a part of the women's relay race, Kalla did not fulfill conditions for getting the bonus and is set to lose some 100.000 SEK ( about 10000 Euros/US dollars) she would otherwise be entitled to. Swedish team manager Johan Sares explains why: “The bonuses are part of åkaravtalet and go to the skiers participating in our training groups. Charlotte knows it full well” The åkaravtalet mentioned is a form of a contract that stipulates skiers' participation not only in training but in various “extracurricular activities” in the interests of team sponsors.…

This 26-year-old Norwegian made a bit of history this month – making redundant a lot of preconceived notions about skiing. Standing at an impressive 1.93cm (6 ft 3 in) and weighing in at 92kg (205 lb), Nygaard hardly looks like a marathoner - yet it was him who was the first to cross the finish line at the most challenging skiing marathon of them all – the Red Bull Nordenskiöldsloppet. It took Nygaard a whopping 11 hours, 45 minutes and 07 seconds to ski 220 km through Arctic wilderness , beating the other 240 participants from 15 nations at Jokkmokk, Sweden, that lies beyond…
