A Ban On Elite Skiers’ Naked Photos: What Can We Lose?

The FIS council in Portoros has made some decisions, but not just official ones about the calendar, double-poling and quotas. Brit Baldishol, from the Norwegian Ski Association, submitted a report, proposing a very strange idea: forbidding elite skiers from taking naked photos. So Northug, Iversen, and others are to stop posting their naked photos on Instagram. It’s very interesting – will Petter Northug follow NSF’s prohibition? In the summer and first autumn months he isn’t a part of the National team, so he can continue to have fun. https://www.instagram.com/p/BMLgjbtBYzi/ https://www.instagram.com/p/BKL7hclBwyf/ https://www.instagram.com/p/sSig_pIz4k/ His principled Swedish rival, Marcus Hellner, takes nude photos very rarely - but when he does, the photos are always very cool. For example, before Falun-2015, Hellner got a tattoo like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and showed it off on social…

This Is How Perfect Skis Are Made, Folks. Part 1

Gear News, Newsfeed, Trivia
Looking at the color booklets and online advertising of leading ski producers, one would think that it's all super advanced 21st century tech, fantastic materials, robots, nano technologies, etc. It's true – partially. The real secret of perfect ski glide is, however, in skilled manual labor, massive experience in production and constant testing of the product. Those are my impressions from visiting a factory of KSF Sport Oy, which produces legacy ski brands known the world over: Karhu, Yoko, and Jarvinen. The most important conclusion I've drawn: there is no huge difference in production methods and materials used in top racing ski, suitable for elite, and the second- and third- tier ski that are quite a bit cheaper – and that was a surprise. But let's go inside the factory…

Ski-Perfect Stomach, Spring Edition

Newsfeed, Trivia
It's springtime, officially, which means the world skiing elites are wrapping up their holidays and returning to the tracks. Mostly, snow tracks, wherever they can be found mid-May. Some, like A Norwegian Lahti golden medalist in relay, Niklas Dyrhaug, however, appear to be combining work and pleasure, by improving their balance and upper core muscles. There's a visible abundance of the latter in this photo: https://www.instagram.com/p/BT5-oU9htOZ Team Sweden's Sofia Henriksson expects the viewers to comment on both her V1 and V2 skating technique. A well deserved Instagram Like from us, Sofia! https://www.instagram.com/p/BUFe_nFB1Fi Meanwhile, a fellow Swede and a member of all-female Team Ski Pro Am, Hedda Bangman, firmly believes that the bikini is the most weather-appropriate training outfit for the May snow in Åre. https://www.instagram.com/p/BUEfVefFQR1 Lovise Heimdal, Norway U23 team…

Top Trainer Prefers Liechtenstein to Switzerland

Leaders, Newsfeed, Trivia
This is the Olympic season, and most top coaches dream of the medals their racers will win in PyeongChang. Not so the senior trainer of the Swiss cross-country ski team, Albert "Bärti" Manhart. The 50-year-old Swiss was a junior trainer of Dario Cologna and has progressed with him, so to speak, to end up in charge of the whole Swiss team, both male and female. With Cologna in shape and the up-and-coming stars such as Nathalie von Siebenthal and Nadine Fähndrich growing in strengh year by year, the Team Swiss had a very good shot at the medals at the Olympics. Still does – but now without Manhart. "A certain fatigue has set in. I feel burnt out, need some pause and rest." he told the Swiss newspaper Blick upon…

Ski Art Erotica

For decades Pierre-Laurent Brenot worked at the heart of the French fashion industry, cooperating with brands such as Saint-Laurent, Nina Ricci, Rochas, Dior, Hermès , until in late 1940s he found a different calling. In the next 15 years Brenot became one the world's most recognizable affichiste – poster artist – of all times. Brenot's works were colorful, daring – and unapogetically sexy, earning him the title of "le "père de la pin-up française »/ the father of the "French pin-up". Some of the ads look suprisingly modern – at least the models do. Look at this promotion of the French motor oil & lubricants firm Bardahl, done more than half a century ago! But we are the skiing site and, therefore, shall concentrate on the Frenchman's two known art-pieces related to  le ski de fond:…
