New ( Fancy) Poles In Town

Gear News, Newsfeed
"...Johnny-come-lately The new kid in town Everybody loves you So don't let them down.." We are not entirely sure Don Henley was singing about Nordic ski poles - but he might as well, because it's rather fitting. Two established gear makers have overcome their lingering doubts and are putting on the market true-race ski poles this season. Bones Sport is a text-book story of a company that cut its teeth in mass-market segment and now steadiiy increases quality (and pricetag) of its offerings. Earlier this year the Spanish producer presented Graphene rollerskis - a fantastic piece of engineering with a jaw-dropping price tag (and very difficult to lay your hands on). With Ultron Bolskan the company from Huesca is making another claim to the slice of the premium, race market.…

We continue our conversation with Yann Vallet, Atomic Nordic boss of the last 4 years, where he talks about products developed under his guidance. All quotes are from Yann - while photos used for illustration purposes are ours, taken at different FIS World Cup stages & during athletes' training. [caption id="attachment_13131" align="alignnone" width="1920"] - Atomic philosophy is " Sport first, but customer satisfaction is equally important"[/caption] [caption id="attachment_13136" align="alignnone" width="1920"] - No, still can not order fully personalized ski construction. But you could order personalized design of the skis provided that you are ready to pay for at least 50 pairs of them.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_13128" align="alignnone" width="1920"] - Atomic does not have special sport skis production. Inside Atomic, Part 1

...Mere five years ago it felt like Atomic is phasing out its involvement in Nordic ski racing. With only one medal in cross skiing competitions in Sochi 2014 ( Claudia Nystad's bronze in 4 X 5k relay) it certainly felt like hey-days of the 1980- early 90s when Atomic was among the leaders on the international circuit are over. Not that anybody would be shocked. Since 1994 Atomic GmbH is fully owned by Amer Sports Group that already has one strong ski-related brand in its portfolio - the Annecy-based Salomon. Atomic was doing ( still does) fantastic podium-wise in crucial Alpine ski segment while Salomon steadily expanded from being leading ski boots producer to becoming top-flight xcski and apparel maker. In situation like that any business consultant would recommend folding…

Review: Best Ski Boots For Skating Right Now, Part I

Gear News, Newsfeed
On definitions: "best" means racing boots, those used by the world's elite skiers to compete & win. In 2019 those are invariably carbon-fiber soled - and, naturally, with carbon cuffs for ankle support. For all SNS fans: sorry, folks - the only athlete we know of still using once-dominant system is Jessie Diggins. Atomic, once a firm " SNS camper", stopped supporting it altogether - Salomon is still holding out but, likely, not for long. Most if not all producers follow a simple maxim: test with top athletes & win the first year of production - sell the next one. In other words, there is often a considerable gap between what you see on TV and what you could actually buy at your friendly local store. We have an issue…

Core Of The Matter

Know-your-skis Wednesday on Dailyskier.com This photo could have been taken at virtually any ski-making factory but happens to be from Atomic in Altenmarkt im Pongau, Austria. Meet Nomex ® honeycomb aramid core that is to be found inside virtually every pair of true racing skis ( except for Madshus- they use a different material ) Nomex is a veteran - DuPont started selling it at the end of 1960s, although back then it was used in fancy applications such an aerospace industry. It found its way into racing ski construction in 1980s and continues to dominate, as already mentioned: nothing provides comparable strength to weight ratio. True Nomex ® is expensive and is only used in top models - cheaper skis get similarly constructed knock-offs. It will continue to underpin…
