Ulvang’s New Mixed Gender Sprint: We Name Pairs Qualified To Run

Ulvang’s New Mixed Gender Sprint: We Name Pairs Qualified To Run

Leaders, Newsfeed, Trivia
FIS' cross country skiing boss Vegard Ulvang have created a storm, announcing in interview with NRK that his organization is looking to spruce up the World Championship program by introducing new formats in skiing. While the idea of having jump boards in sprint runs seems to be getting the most attention, the most realistic and easy to implement is the one about mixed gender relays. It's been tested in biathlon and there are no objective reasons why it couldn't be tried even tomorrow. We have decided to help Mr. Ulvang by taking his idea a step further – how about allowing only the known couples or “items” as they used to be called, to participate in such races? Not wanting to be known as a gossip mag, we limit our…

Today in Skiing: All News That’s Fit To Print

Leaders, Newsfeed, Trivia
Winter is coming – only seven weeks separate us from the FIS World Cup first race in Ruka, Finland. More news about or related to skiing is coming in. We don't pretend to cover them all – rather, we do a bit of selection based on the wow-factor. Let's hope you like it. 1. Russian skiers are the first to present their new racing suits for the Olympic season. The supplier stays the same (Russian Ski Federation has a long term contract with Adidas) – but what a radical departure in color scheme! From (kinda) pink'n'blue of the last season the new ones have gone all burgundy! The presentation was all homey affair – no press conferences and photoshoots. Out of nowhere, a photo of nameless skier with a cropped…

‘Trofeo delle Contrade’, Europe’s First Ski Race of Season

‘Trofeo delle Contrade’, Europe’s First Ski Race of Season

Newsfeed, Travel & Mass Sport
When does competition skiing season start in the Northern Hemisphere? Most people would likely point at the races in Lapland in November – but we say it starts with the ‘Trofeo delle Contrade’ held annually – where else?- in Livigno, Italy. On Friday, August 25th the town high street, via Plan, will once again become one kilometer long skiing stadium - just for the night. Nothing like watching skiers flying down the middle of one of the fanciest shopping streets in the Alpine region, with all those mannequins dressed in top Italian clothing brands in shops' windows for atmosphere. And what of snow? We think Trofeo delle Contrade’ is as much about showing off Livigno's prowess in snowfarming as about anything else. The snow that will be used to set…

"It's like a relaxing spa outdoors. In this society that goes faster and faster, I recommend everyone to go to the mountains, surrounded by nature, to slow the pace, with a pair of skis" Not, perhaps, what you would expect from the world's top ski sprinter but thus speaks Federico Pellegrino. A 26 year old from Aosta has appeared on the pages on the Italian edition of the Vanity Fair magazine last week to talk about his life and career. https://www.vanityfair.it/sport/storie-sport/2017/04/29/federico-pellegrino-oltre-agli-sci-ce-di-piu There the leader of the Italian cross country ski team talks about his path to the world championship crown in Lahti this year. https://www.instagram.com/p/BTWkdo-g6Yy Pellegrino singles out influence of his girlfriend, a fellow Team Italia sprinter Greta Laurent, as the most important factor in his success: " She straightened…

Ride Like a Skiing Star

Ride Like a Skiing Star

Leaders, Money & Finance, Newsfeed
The skiers drive a lot - and we mean a lot. Between competitions and training venues, an average elite skier clocks tens of thousands of kilometers per season. For many, their cars become like a second home – or, more likely, the first one, as the skiers are more likely to seat in a car, than at the home couches. The ideal skier's car needs to be a) spacious – because, you know, all that gear b) snow-already – which in practice means a four-wheel drive c) fuel sipping – because who wants to pay $$$$$ for gasoline? We looked at some of the ride choices the world leading skiers made. https://www.instagram.com/p/BTPHRzNlDrt Here's Heidi Weng posing by her customized Volvo XC90 D5 R-Design, given to the skier by the Bilia…
