It was a big weekend. For the first time ever in this part of the galaxy the public channels of Norway and Sweden did not show the FIS World Cup races to their viewers. Just to remind you how chess pieces are set now: Pan-Scandinavian Nordic Entertainment Group a.k.a NENT acquired broadcasting rights in three key markets - aforementioned Norway and Sweden plus Finland - and have started on the weekend to broadcast the races on Viaplay platform as well as on television channels it owns: In Norway - for free on TV3 In Sweden you gotta pay to watch Frida and Ebba on TV6, it's no longer free. In Finland there is a transitional deal in place according to which public YLE still shows some races e.g. Ruka this…

You know who won in Ruka today. Now meet their significant others

Have you seen how convincingly Maja Dahlqvist and Alexander Terentyev won their respective FIS World Cup races on Friday? We don't claim to know how they were preparing for them - for the lack of specific coaching knowledge, clearly. What we do know however, is that both had their significant others present in Ruka, at the starting lane. And that's a significant factor, we are sure. There is one notable stand-out, however: Yuri Borodavko, the coach of Alex Bolshunov, Natalia Nepryaeva, Denis Spitsov etc. The amount of days his skiers spent on snow so far? Zero. That despite spending the last 10 days in Ramsau, right by the famed Dachstein glacier. While hundreds of skiers ranging from " true weekend warrior" to Dario Cologna queue up every day to get to Dachstein tracks , the " Boro Team" is spending all their time alternating between rollerskiing and running down in…

How much Klaebo earns – and what others could learn from him

JHK AS , a company owned by - you guessed it - Johannes Høsflot Klaebo - just published its annual results for 2020. That gives us an excuse to dig into what top skiers make - and how. [caption id="attachment_18557" align="alignnone" width="1091"] World's biggest earner among male skiers [/caption] Every modern athlete got three basic sources of revenue: her/ his salary or stipend, her/ his prize money - and whatever she/ he earns outside the tracks, by, effectively, selling personal appeal. The world works in such a way that for the first two sources of income you have to pay taxes as an individual a.k.a. income tax. All major ski nations love to tax their high earners in excess of 40% , some much higher . Russia is a notable…
