In interview with the Daily Skier Yelena Vyalbe reveals that Russia is serious about building world-class snow-sports facilities in the Caucasus mountains, a region of snowcaps with hitherto untapped potential . ".... Ever since I became the chairman of the Russian XCski federation some 11 years ago, I was arguing for creating of top-level ski resorts/ training centers in the Caucasus mountains. The snow is there, the right altitudes are there. But zero history of dealing with cross-country skiing in particular..."   The Northern Caucasus region, a part of the Russian Federation,   rivals the Alps in the amount of suitable places for world-class ski resorts , yet has a very limited history of providing for fans of snow-sports. Even in the Soviet times the training centers were located on the…

Olli Ohtonen, Iivo Niskanen’s Coach, On Modern Training Methods Of Top Athletes

Leaders, Newsfeed
One of the most fascinating aspects of cross-country skiing as a pro-sport is how fast and how radically the technique changes. What was considered ideal barely ten years ago ( insert your favorite skier's name here) - is decidedly old-school today. That's largeky because world's top scientists got involved and, with countless measurements, research & fine-tuning , effort to help athletes to shave off yet another second in competition. The Daily Skier went to Vuokatti, Finland, to talk to one of the best known " wizards of better technique". Meet Olli Ohtonen, Iivo Niskanen's coach. A world-class skier himself, Ohtonen competed at the World Championships and at the 2006 Olympics in Turin, then received PhD in Sports Science at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland's prime sport research facility. Subject? "Requirements…

Evgeniya Krupitskaya: No Haters Writing To Me – Definite Sign I’m No Star Yet

Nobody had more meteoric rise last season than an 18 year old teenager from Saint Petersburg. Six months ago even the best informed specialists likely haven't heard the name. Unlike other brilliant Juniors, Helene Fossesholm and Veronika Stepanova, who were on the radar for the last couple of years, Evgeniya Krupitskaya, who is year younger, came seemingly from nowhere. But she is surely there to stay: two silver medals at the Junior World Championships plus a 4th place ( a third medal was very close!), a successful debut in the World Cup in Engadin and very respectful performance at the Russian Nationals. We spoke to the " world hottest" junior after her season's end I'm not the " biggest junior prospect in the world" - that's more of my goal…

Pearl Of Siberia

Pearl Of Siberia

Newsfeed, Travel & Mass Sport
The Pearl of Siberia is called "pearl" not for nothing: many heard of it, but few made a pilgrimage to Siberia to see one of the world's largest ski stadium for themselves. It's about to change: Pearl of Siberia, some 40k from oil- rich city of Tyumen, will host FIS World Cup finals next year. Here's what athletes and, God willing, dedicated fans shall find there: - snow guaranteed tracks. They laid fancy earth- freezing piping system underneath plus it's you know, Siberia after all. They ski here some 7-8 months / year. - huge ski stadium comparable only to Holmenkollen in grandeur and sitting capacity. - competition tracks wide as US highways. Pearl of Siberia was in many ways built as biathlon venue - biathletes like their tracks to…
