Late on Friday , July 31st, the FIS has published an announcement: already once postponed Congress will now take place in May-June 2021. It's significant. The 52th Congress was initially scheduled to take place in Thailand in May 2020 and was provisionally moved to October this year. It wasn't an ordinary affair: the incumbent president of the International Ski Federation was supposed to step down and the new leader of the snow sports on this planet to be elected. When Gian-Franco Kasper took the helm Klaebo and Bolshunov were learning how to walk and Frida K. wasn't even born yet. The International Ski Federation has formally announced on Friday that its Congress in Pattaya, Thailand, scheduled for May, is no longer happening. A new date and location for the Congress to convene is yet to be announced. Gian Franco Kasper,76, will continue serving as the FIS president until the Congress elects his replacement. Whenever the new Congress shall convene, they will have a massive new additional subject to discuss: what to do about diminished sponsorship income after the pandemic.

Yes, the International Ski Federation Congress in Pattaya, Thailand due to kick off in 8 weeks is still on. Possibly, the last international event with 1000+ participants in the foreseeable future. It might be just a formality - yet still the fact worth noting and, some would say, symbolic. It was meant to be a special one: after 22 years as the FIS President Gian-Franco Kasper was going to retire with the Congress choosing his replacement. A new boss of international snow sports would only become fifth helmsman in more than a century of the FIS existence.
