Amateur Skier Beats Handful Of Pros, Including Legendary Petter Eliassen, In 220k Race

Of course, Vegard Vinje is not your average weekend warrior. But a 27 year old Norwegian has a full time job outside skiing thus fully qualifying for the "amateur" title. However, after Vegard has finished 3rd last weekend in Red Bull Nordenskiöldsloppet 220k, world's longest regularly held race, the title "World's Strongest Amateur" is due. La Sgambeda stands out both in Visma Ski Classics professional series and as a mass marathon. It's the only real race both pros and amateurs at the beginning of the season – after the Italian race there will be hiatus of roughly six weeks (unless you're planning to run Vasaloppet China – in this case "only" about 4 and half) After two years of no natural snow and the race distance both shortnened ( in 2015 – significantly) and run on laps, the 2017 edition is "coming back to its roots" – a 35km track is prepared, thanks both to Mother Nature and hard work of organizing committee that patched over parts that were not quite snow covered. 700 people for 25 countries have signed up for the race. UPDATE Sept. 2018 ...Kind of hard to believe, but almost a year has flown by since Team United Bakeries director Bernhard Rønning and the boss of Rollerski Mallorca, Manu Rullan came up with the idea as brilliant as it is simple: Allow amateur skiers into a professional skiing team camp. To train, live and even eat their meals together with some of the planet's best long distance skiers: Tore Bjorseth Berdal, Stian Hoelgaard, Astrid Øyre Slind, Torleif Syrstad and, of course, triple Vasaloppet winner John Kristian Dahl. Team United Bakeries had since become Team Koteng. But the idea really took off.
