Anastasia Sedova Joins Good Company

Newsfeed, Trivia
Bronze medalist of Seefeld'19 Anastasia Sedova will skip the upcoming season. The boss of the Russian cross country skiing Elena Vyalbe has (reluctantly) confirmed the news when asked whether there is any truth in rumours that Sedova is pregnant. Sedova,24, joins a fellow Seefeld medal winner Yulia Belorukova as well as two other Team Russia skiers, Elena Soboleva-Ustigova (wife of Sergei Ustiugov) and Tatyana Aleshina, who are all expecting. It's doubtful that any team in the history of cross country skiing ever had four of its athletes out through pregnancy.

Leaders, Newsfeed
The FIS World Cup 2019/20 is about to kick off in Ruka, Finland. Tomorrow we will update you on those who we reckon got a shot on winning the Cup. But today we want to start by introducing (or reminding you) the people who make them athletes, who shape them and who send them to the battles for podium: Coaches It's not a definitive list, not every coach is mentioned below - mostly those we got to watch operating in the months between the end of the last season and now. [caption id="attachment_13733" align="alignnone" width="1920"] Eirik Myhr Nossum coaches men's side of Team Norway. Last season's clean sweep at the gold in Seefeld plus the WC 18/19 will be an extremely hard act to repeat for a 34 year old…

Squires, Team Russia Know-How

Newsfeed, Training & Outfitting
Well, it isn't really. Coaches who maintain their form were training alongside active athletes for yonks. A squire - or " coach who trains along" - fulfills many roles including conducting training sessions  , leading by example ( how about 5 hour mountain trekking or equally long biking? ) and to some, namely team leaders, being quasi-personal coach. It could be argued that recent successes of both Team Slovenia and Team GB are linked to that active coaching system. But it's the Russians who polished the system and in some ways took a step further in the last couple of years. Here's how it works: [caption id="attachment_12791" align="alignnone" width="1920"] ...it's all started with Markus Cramer arrival to Team Russia. First order of things was to get him an interpreter. Up Close & Personal With Yelena Vyalbe: Part II

Part 2. Past and present. And a bit about future too. How would you compare Team Russia at the Olympics in Sochi in 2014 and in Pyeongchang-2018? Well, we failed in Sochi . Despite memorable victory at 50k. ( Russia's 1-2-3 on the podium) The fate was against us - Ustiugoiv fall, sprint relay collision, broken poles etc. - but one can't blame the fate only. Our women failed miserably and yes, I was calling them «Tumbochka” ( literally - “nightstand”, implying that somebody's heavy, overweight, unwieldy) publicly – and much worse in the locker room. Did we play unfair in Sochi? There was no “state sponsored” or any other doping in our team – period, but we did use “legally permitted tricks” such as extending last stretch on sprints…

Up Close & Personal With Yelena Vyalbe: Part I

...as previously explained, we here at the DailySkier are not huge fans of loooong interviews and thus nearly always making a conscious decision to split them into 2-3 parts, depending on the original length of conversation. Today, in Part 1 Yelena Vyalbe, head of the Russian XCSki Federation and manager of Team Russia ( yes, she sits on two chairs, so to speak) talks about disqualifications of the Russian skiers , relationship with sponsors and touches upon the recent Olympics ( more on that in Part 2) ... Says Vyalbe: ...I have had very mixed feelings throughout the Olympics. Was happy for our youngsters were performing so well yet I felt bad for the guys who were not allowed to the Games – especially for ( Sergey) Ustiugov and (…
